The Union of Myanmar has established an objective of transforming a state of
conventional farming to mechanized farming initially and translating this
mechanized farming country into modern developed industrialized one and it has
been implementing this objective systematically. Under this scheme, State-owned
sectors as well as cooperatives and private sectors, guided by Myanmar
Industrial Development Committee are also actively taking part in the tasks.
MINISTRY OF
INDUSTRY-1
There are two departments and six enterprises under the Ministry of
Industry -1, which are producing basic necessities for the people thus taking
part in the development of Myanmar Economy as other sectors are doing.
There are six industries taking direct responsibility for the production of
goods as mentioned under.
(a) Myanmar Textile Industries
(b) Myanmar Foodstuff Industries
(c) Myanmar Pharmaceutical Industries
(d) Myanmar Ceramic Industries
(e) Myanmar General and Maintenance Industries
(f) Myanmar Paper & Chemical Industries
Under Myanmar Textile Industries, there are Textile Mills, Textile
Mills and Finishing Plants, Dyeing and Printing Factory, Garment Factories,
Blanket Factory, Towel Factories and Sewing Thread Factories established all
over the country.
The Ministry of Industry-1 has arranged the possibilities for its enterprises
and external businessmen in order to participate in the fields of cooperation
as follows:-
(a) Joint
Venture Business
Total investment of these 10 JV companies amounts to Kyats 708.48 millions
including US$ 14.62 millions in the form of foreign currency.
(b) The
Status of Buy Back System
Out of the industries of Ministry of Industry (1), 23 factories under Myanmar
Textile Industries, Myanmar Foodstuff Industries, Myanmar Pharmaceutical
Industries, Myanmar General and Maintenance Industries and Myanmar Paper and
Chemical Industries cooperate with local and foreign entrepreneurs and
departments in order to efficiently utilize the surplus capacity of machines
of the enterprise without affecting the present production. Production under
the buy back system included textile fabric, garments, biscuits, wafer,
injections, chemical powders , 95% alcohol, different kinds of soaps, plastic
sheetings, plastic bags, margarine, wooden boxes and detergents.
(c) Paying back the cost of machinery with manufacturing cost of finished
goods
Under this system, the Ministry of Industry-1, in cooperation with local and
foreign entrepreneurs, purchased the machines in order to establish Thanlyin
Garment Factory No. 5 in the form of Joint Venture between Myanmar Textile
Enterprise and Daewoo Corporation of Korea.
Private
Industrial Activities
The Directorate of Regional Industrial Supervising and Inspection of the
Ministry has permitted registration of 36303 industries, according to the
procedures under Private Industrial Enterprise Law, since 1 February 1991 up
to December 1998.
Industrial
Sector in Myanmar
If one reviews the development and the future situation of the industrial
sector which is inclusive in the national plans, one can see that the sector’s
participation in the nationals economic sector is 7.6 percent in the fiscal
2000-2001; the target ratio of the sector in the economy in the fiscal
2002-2006 at the end of the third five-year national plan is 10.2 percent. In
the previous five-year national economic plan the industrial sector saw an
annual average growth of 10.6 percent. The targeted annual average industrial
growth for the present five-year plans 16.6 percent. Apart from efforts for
realizing is objectives, the Ministry of Industry-1 should also give
assistance for the success of the entire industrial sector including the
private and cooperative sectors.
At present, 83 main industries and 61 sub-industries totalling 144 industries
of the six branches of the Ministry of Industry-1 are manufacturing 542 kinds
of goods. Arrangements are under way to extend new factories, enterprises and
products.
It is heartening to note that the Ministry is successfully implementing its
tasks. In fiscal 2000-2001, the performance of the Ministry’s production
sector was 116.62 percent in fiscal 2000-2001 up from 11.3 percent in fiscal
1999-2000. It is targeted to achieve progress by 12.7 percent in 2001-2002.
During the period of first three months, 21 percent of the target set for the
whole year had been achieved. The same period last year, only 19.7 percent of
the target was achieved. So, the work performance of this year is higher than
that of last year.

MINISTRY OF
INDUSTRY-2
There are nine major factories and Industrial Training School where 12156
service personnel are working under the Ministry of Industry-2.
The factories under the Ministry of Industry-2, product various kinds of tires
and tubes, trucks, light vehicles ,bicycles, pumping machines, hand-tractors,
tractors, threshers, hoes, bulbs, florescent tubes, dry cells, transformers,
electric metres, household electrical equipment.
In order to earn foreign currency, the factories also produce and export the
spare parts, lathes, buses, part for water works, ribbon blender, power tiller
and light trucks.
Joint Ventures
The Ministry is endeavoring to establish 5 joint ventures for promotion of
foreign investment and transfer of technologies. They are;

- Myanmar Suzuki Company Limited
- Myanmar Ekarat Transformer Company Limited
- Myanmar Matsushita Company Limited
Industrial Exhibitions
Myanmar Industrial and Handicraft Exhibitions are also organized with the
cooperation of the Ministry of Industry-1 and the Ministry of Forestry and also
supported by C.P Exhibition Ltd., (Hong Kong) and Silver Cris Pte. Ltd.
(Myanmar) at Defense Museum, U Wisara Road, Yangon.
Myanmar Machinery Expo’ 95 was performed from 5 to 8 December 1995 where
textile, fabric and sewing machines, shoes and related machines, wood polishing
machines, machinery for producing plastic and rubber products and packaging and
foodstuff are displayed.
Furthermore, Myanmar Textile Industries, Myanma Pharmaceutical Industries,
Myanma Ceramic Industries under Ministry of Industry -1 and Myanmar Timber
Enterprise under the Ministry of Forestry also displayed their products in that
exhibition.
Myanmar Machinery Expo’ 96 was held from 6 to 9 December 1996, participating 91
companies from 16 countries. Over 2000 business representatives from foreign
countries display the products and machines industries shows and handouts.
"Win Thuzar" Shops
In accordance with the guidance of the Head of State, that the products of the
Ministry of Industry -1 with high quality and fair prices should be distributed
to the grass-root level throughout the country for enabling all strata to use
and consume them. As of August 2001, 22 Win Thuzar chain stores and 24 shops
were opened in major cities and towns throughout the country.
Establishment of Myanmar Industrial Development Bank
In order to financially support the industrial entrepreneurs, Myanmar industrial
Development Bank, Yangon Branch and Mandalay Branch were established in 1996 and
1997 respectively.
Setting up Industrial Zones
Under the supervision of Regional Industrial Supervision Sub-committee, 18
industrial zone have been established in order ot promote and give necessary
assistance to the industries as follows:

MINERALS
The products of Myanmar Gems Enterprise are jade, gemstone, jewellery and
silver. The enterprise has entered into production in accordance with the
promulgation of the Myanmar Gemstone Law on 29 September 1995.
Mineral explorations are being undertaken by the Department of Geological Survey
and Mineral Exploration. The Department explores diamond, gemstones, gold,
platinum, uranium, wolfram, tungsten, coal, silver, lead, cooper, antimony,
chromite, manganese, iron, asbestos, ornamental stone, gypsum and limestone.
Mining of Gemstone and Jade
Natural resources including gemstones belong to the
State. In accordance with the economic laws and Myanmar Gemstone Law, private
entrepreneurs are permitted to produce gemstones. Under the supervision of the
Department of Inspection and Myanmar Gems Enterprise, illegal production of
gemstones are prevented. Besides arrangements are being made to make "Pinlon
Yadanar Market" a market-centre for gems.
World’s Largest Pearl
The world’s largest natural pearl was found on the
seabedat Mukkalauk pearl oyster exploration area north-west of Zadeggy Island in
Kawthaung Township, Tanintharyi Division on 18 April. The Pearl is 6.2 cm
in length 5.3 cm in width and 3 cm in height, exceeding the measurements of He
Hope Pearl recorded as the world’s largest in the past. The pearl’s weight
is 45.06 mommes, 845 carats, 169 grams and 929.50 yatis. According to
Gemological Institute of America, the Hope Pearl found in about 1800, was 5.71
cm is length and grams in weight. In addition to the pearl’s size, it is
also a ware, significant and quality gem, atc find of which is auspicious news
to the state and the people.
3000 ton Jade Block of Myanmar
The 3000 ton Jade Block was digged at Plot No. 109
Ruby Dragon Jade and Gem Co., Ltd., Nanthmaw in Phakant Phakant Township on
April 2001, It was found by special Region-6 of Pao Peace Group. The Jade
Block 70 feet in length, 16 feet in breadth and 20 feet in height. It will
be dug much as possible to be observed in natural position.
