Wan Hai Lines began in 1965 primarily as a log transportation company operating in Taiwan, Japan, and Southeast Asia. In 1976, in response to the rapid development of international trade in the Asia Pacific and other international trends, Wan Hai transformed itself into a full-container vessel shipping company.

Wan Hai's shipping routes include Taiwan, Kanton and Kansai areas of Japan, Korea, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Burma, Cambodia, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Middle East. Wan Hai provides full-container vessel shipping with regular routes among these areas. Its network includes subsidiaries and agents in all of Asia's major cities and ports.
In 2004, Wan Hai had 66 full-container vessels in operation with capacity over 90,000 TEU. In addition to the exclusive terminal in West 17 of Keelung, Wan Hai also leased No. 34, No. 35, No. 63, and No. 64 in Taichung and Kaohsiung, which makes Wan Hai the only carrier in Taiwan with exclusive terminals in the northern, central and southern regions of the island. Currently, 15 of its 20 routes in operation provide direct calling to 43 major international commercial ports, giving Wan Hai the most comprehensive and intensive service network available in Asia.
Wan Hai constantly explores new routes and calling ports, builds vessels, and replaces old containers and terminal equipment in order to maintain operational performance and reinforce its competitive advantages. It has made strategic alliances with renowned carriers to distribute operational risks, reduce operational costs, and reinforce its service network.
Since the start of the 21st century, Wan Hai has undertaken full-scale corporate reengineering and reinforcement of its employee training and development programs.
